Mandela
Mandela. Nelson Mandela in his temporary home at the South Bank Centre, overlooking the River Thames, while the Festival Hall has its multi-million pound refurbishment. He's now [from summer 2007] back in his original position at the side of the building, watching the trains into Charing Cross station. I wanted to try to show the texture of his features (and the strength of his character) against the hard lines of the building. The bare flagpole holds in the top left of the picture. But despite quite a lot of messing about with the tones I don't think it quite works. As reflected perhaps in the somewhat indeterminate 15/20 and 18/20 from two judges.
