Marathon Watchers
Marathon Watchers. Another shot of the 2005 London Marathon from the Hungerford footbridge over the Thames and the Embankment – a few feet along the bridge from 25 Miles Down – in the short time I had for photography that year. By this time I'd swapped the 200mm for the 12-24mm zoom, and took this at 12mm (35mm equivalent = 18mm) by holding the camera above my head and guessing where to point it, then checking the screen. Three earlier shots were not quite right, but I was pleased with this one. The nice thing about really wide angle lenses is the incredible depth of field.
In competition it had a mixed reception. Ron Tear didn't like it at all and gave it 15/20 (which was generous, considering his comments). Later in the year it had a slight reprieve with an 18/20 from John Woolliams.
Technical: Nikon D100, 12-24mm f/4 lens @ 12mm, 1/800 at f/8, ISO200
