The images below were my offerings for the print competitions in the 2007/08 season of Hertford and District Camera Club, where I've been a member for an unbelievable 35 years. Like most photo clubs we have a number of competitions through the season with the aim of showing off our work and receiving helpful criticism from visiting judges – hopefully our photography improves over time as a result, both artistically and technically. This year I'm adding the photos to this page as I enter each competition [or even a little earlier, if other members want advance info!], hence the small number to start.
The comps are a good incentive to produce new prints, and there's always a buzz on competition nights, with everyone hoping that the judge will like their pics or will at least understand them and react sensibly. A good mark is nice, a good comment is better. Sometimes he or she produces valid criticism, and I realize too late, in my regular seat at the back, that they're absolutely right. Other times they miss the point altogether, and I sit there fuming...
